Nihilist Cheerleader with Goddess Complex, Cassie Chantel, L.B., Don P
Volumes Presents: Queens of Hip Hop Vol 6 featuring Nihilist Cheerleader

Nihilist Cheerleader is making a name for themselves in the thriving Athens/ Atlanta music scene with their raw, Riot Grrrl- inspired punk sound. The band formed in 2015 in Athens, Ga, and found early success in a saturated scene with their new take on an established concept of “punk”. The band brings a charged energy to their live and recorded performances that is engaging and refreshing. Nihilist Cheerleader’s sound appropriately reflects the band’s name in it’s duality- both turbulent and controlled, angsty and uplifting, thoughtful and effortless. What sets them apart from other musicians in their midsts is their story-like songwriting. Like the artists that have inspired them, the band’s music is largely rooted in political and social commentary. Their lyrics command the listener to take a closer look at social injustices related to gender and power structures, and ones internal dialogue. Rather than aimlessly identify problems they see, the band’s intention is to start a constructive conversation about how we can combat and resolve such issues. Their songs inspire rebellion, self exploration, change, and especially dance.

Pilgrim with Them Dirty Roses
Pilgrim

Born out of the ashes of previous bands, Pilgrim was formed by Paul McHugh along with TJ Machado and Matt Hudgins. The first order of business was recording an album. Working with Drew Vanderberg out of Chase Park Transduction, Pilgrim recorded twelve basic tracks in two days. This laid the foundation for the album which was worked on and completed over the next few months. In the meantime, Matt Hudgins went on to form The Shit Hot Country Band of which Paul and TJ are also members. Filling the back beat gap was none other than Brad Morgan (EZB) from the Drive By Truckers. Matt Stoessel rounded out the band with his guitar slinging. The as of now self titled debut "Pilgrim" will be released in the fall of 2012. See ya at the show!

B.B. Palmer
B.B. Palmer

Born from the plains of southeast Alabama, amongst the fertile ground in Lee County, BB Palmer & Kudzu are one of the few current old school honky-tonk outfits that stay true to the genre of country music. Simple yet intricate, humble yet proud, the band combines early traditional influences of country music (Lefty Frizzell & Hank Williams Sr.) with the likes of modern singer/songwriter influences (Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson). The band has shared the stage with the likes of Alan Jackson, Earth Wind & Fire, Old Crow Medicine Show, and St. Paul & The Broken Bones. Known as Lee County’s finest, BB & crew aim to raise the bar at each venue, whether it be downtown at your local bar, the festival scene, or at the frat house. The band’s set combines the old with the new; original material with the classics that everyone loves.

Cosmic Charlie
Cosmic Charlie Acoustic Set

In 1999, a group of aspiring jamsters in Athens GA converged to share "one more Saturday night", an evening of live Grateful Dead music with the local townsfolk. With Deadheads still grieving over the loss of Jerry Garcia a mere 4 years earlier, these musicians were united by the conviction that the world needed more live Grateful Dead music. That fateful evening, dubbed "One More Saturday Night" swiftly transformed into the touring machine known as COSMIC CHARLIE. Now, 20 years and roughly 800 shows later, the convergence has grown stronger than ever. Cosmic Charlie has toured coast-to-coast, and performed alongside Grateful Dead members & Dead-related musical family. From Veneta to Virginia Beach, Louisville to Little Rock, Missoula to Myrtle Beach... Cosmic Charlie has gained a first hand understanding of the concept of "long strange trip". And our beloved fans have had our backs all the way! On Sat Aug 24, Cosmic Charlie returns to the stage of the Georgia Theatre in Athens GA - the site of our very first show in the summer of 1999. The band will play acoustic and electric sets. Come out and join the fun as we celebrate the band's storied history & the beginning of the next 20 years!
